Getting covered: trade press pitches and the 2027 manufacturing awards worth entering
A directory of 20 trade publications across six industries, with what each one takes from outside and how far ahead, plus the 2027 manufacturing awards and benchmarking programs in the order you need to act. The first deadline is Jan. 15, 2027.

Trade editors run application stories with numbers, and the manufacturing awards most worth a small team’s time are the free benchmarking programs that send entrants a report. Plenty of manufacturers with 50 to 500 people have a story an editor would print and never send it, such as a machine shop that cut setup time in half, a molder that brought tooling in-house or a fabricator that hired 30 people in a tight labor market. What editors mostly receive is product launches and anniversaries, which land in a press release queue and stay there.
Pitch one of those stories to the one or two publications your customers read, and enter the benchmarking programs even if you do not expect to win, because the report is worth having either way. The directory below lists 20 trade publications by industry, with what each takes from outside, how far ahead and which have posted 2027 editorial calendars. The awards table puts 12 programs in the order you need to act, starting with the Manufacturing Leadership Awards deadline of Jan. 15, 2027.
What do trade editors actually run?
Modern Machine Shop’s editorial guidelines describe a magazine “primarily devoted to the application of machining technology,” ask writers to make contact “about six months before the issue in which you would like it to appear,” and say “Original, unpublished material offered to MMS on an exclusive basis will be considered.” The Control Engineering contact page says emailed new product press releases are no longer processed by hand, that vendors upload product news to a self-service database, that bylined features must be unique to the publisher, and that articles should be discussed with the right content manager before submission.
The story editors want most is a specific problem at a specific plant, what changed, and what happened to cycle time, scrap, throughput or headcount. MMS gives these application stories a section of their own, Better Production, and its guidelines ask for 800 to 1,200 words and four to six photos taken at the user’s shop. A named customer helps, and so does an offer to let the editor call or visit the plant. Our look at application stories engineers actually read scores eight of them.
Original data earns space even for a small company, because an editor cannot get your survey, a benchmark from your own operations or your analysis of public numbers from anyone else.
Workforce stories travel too. A plant manager who rebuilt a training program, an apprentice class or a second-generation owner handing the business to a third all make features, and the same stories belong on your careers page.
A product press release still has a home, usually a products section, editor or database, and seven of the 20 publications in the directory route product news there, though the release will not become a feature.
How should you pitch a trade publication?
Pick one publication and one editor. Read three recent issues, find the section your story fits, and send a short email with the result in the subject line (“Molder cuts changeover from 90 minutes to 20 with in-house quick-change tooling”), two paragraphs on what happened, the numbers, who at the customer will talk, and the photos you can provide. Offer it exclusively. If the editor passes, ask what would make it a fit, then try the next publication.
Lead times are long, and MMS asks for ideas six months ahead and finished articles three months before the issue. ASSEMBLY’s 2027 content guide closes ads for its January 2027 issue on Dec. 3, 2026, and story planning runs ahead of that. Control Engineering’s 2027 editorial calendar sets editorial deadlines of Nov. 2, 2026 for its January/February print edition and Feb. 1, 2027 for April/May, and says its research, metrics and awards articles are staff written. If you want coverage around a trade show, pitch in time for the show preview issue; MMS wants show product releases at least eight weeks before the show issue.
Get the customer’s written permission before you pitch a story with their name in it. If you cannot name them, describe the customer by industry and size and offer the editor a plant visit.
The directory of 20 trade publications and how to reach them
We checked each page below on Oct. 26, 2026, and we link to the page rather than reprint addresses, because staff change. Three of the 20 had 2027 editorial calendars we could open that day, ASSEMBLY’s 2027 content guide, Architectural Record’s 2027 editorial calendar and Control Engineering’s 2027 editorial calendar. For the others, ask for the media kit, where calendars usually sit, or ask the editor what is planned.
Seven of the 20 (The Fabricator, Machine Design, Automation World, Control Engineering, Pro Builder, Construction Dive and Supply House Times) send product news to a separate address, database, editor, service or section, so a release sent to a features editor is in the wrong place. Seven (MMS, Production Machining, MoldMaking Technology, Machine Design, IndustryWeek, Architectural Record and Control Engineering) post written rules for outside contributors, and those are the easiest places to start because the rules tell you the length and the lead time. Where a lead time is posted, finished articles are due two to three months before the issue and ideas about six months ahead, so a story pitched in November 2026 is a spring 2027 story.
| Publication | Industry | What it takes from outside, and how far ahead |
|---|---|---|
| Modern Machine Shop | Metals and Machining | Better Production case histories (800 to 1,200 words, exclusive); ideas six months ahead, articles three months before the issue; show product releases eight weeks before the show issue (guidelines) |
| Production Machining | Metals and Machining | Case in Point stories on a quantified result (800 to 1,200 words) and features of 1,800 to 2,000 words for high-volume precision parts makers; consult the editors before writing a feature (guidelines) |
| The Fabricator | Metals and Machining | A dedicated press release address for news, listed on the contact page and masthead |
| MoldMaking Technology | Plastics and Rubber | Technical, how-to and tip features on designing, building and repairing molds; ideas six months ahead, articles two months before the issue; news and product releases any time (guidelines) |
| Plastics Technology | Plastics and Rubber | Editors listed with their beats, from injection and blow molding to materials, additives and extrusion, so pitch the one whose beat fits your process |
| Plastics Machinery & Manufacturing | Plastics and Rubber | Equipment stories that answer what it does, what is new about it and what it means for the processor; a Problem Solved feature; an annual Machinery Investment Survey of processors (about) |
| ASSEMBLY | Industrial Machinery and Equipment | Assembly automation, manual workstations, power tools and joining methods; a themed eMagazine every month in its 2027 content guide, from Smart Factories in January to Capital Spending in December |
| Machine Design | Industrial Machinery and Equipment | Technical contributed articles on the what, how and why, not a product pitch; exclusive, no editorial schedule, usually online at least a couple of weeks after it arrives; press releases handled separately |
| IndustryWeek | All industries | Contributed articles of 600 to 1,200 words for manufacturing executives, first-run only and never promotional; replies to pitches in two to four weeks; print issues are generally staff-written |
| Manufacturing.net | All industries | Editors listed by title; it covers operations and leadership more than products, so pitch plant and workforce stories |
| Automation World | Automation and Industrial Tech | A dedicated address for new product releases; other editorial outreach goes to the head of content |
| Control Engineering | Automation and Industrial Tech | Product news through its self-service New Products for Engineers Database; bylined features must be unique to the publisher and agreed with a content manager first; the 2027 calendar gives a topic list and editorial deadline for each month, about two to three months ahead |
| The Robot Report | Automation and Industrial Tech | A general contact form; for robotics firms, its RBR50 list (below) is the more direct route to coverage |
| Building Design + Construction | Building Products | Editorial director and managing editor by name; runs the Top Building Products competition (below) |
| Architectural Record | Building Products | Product news three months before market introduction, unpublished products first; 2027 product sections by month, including HVAC in February, cladding in March, kitchen and bath in April, windows and doors in June and glass and glazing in October |
| Pro Builder | Building Products | NAHB’s official media partner; a senior editor for products handles product news |
| Construction Dive | Building Products | A news tip form for stories, and a separate service for posting press releases |
| Modern Distribution Management | Industrial Distribution | One editorial address on the contact page; MDM is a division of NAW, and its recognition programs (below) are another route in |
| Industrial Distribution | Industrial Distribution | Executive editor and editor by name; a distributor’s story about a supplier program lands better here than the supplier’s own release |
| Supply House Times | Industrial Distribution | The American Supply Association’s official publication, written for plumbing, heating, cooling and PVF wholesaler-distributors and their suppliers; a new products section for those lines |
The 2027 manufacturing awards and benchmarking programs worth entering
Benchmarking programs such as the two Top Shops surveys rank you on data you submit and send every participant a report. Plant and project awards judge an entry, and product awards are usually tied to a trade show and open only to exhibitors.
For a company of 50 to 500 people, the benchmarking programs are the best value. They are free, the report helps your operations team whether or not you place, and a designation like “Top Shop” is proof your sales team and recruiters can use for years.
One 2027 deadline is open now, and most of the rest open between late January and May. Of the 12 programs, four state no entry fee (both Top Shops surveys, ASSEMBLY Plant of the Year and Best of IBS), three charge one and five do not say. The table runs in the order you need to act. Where a program has not announced its 2027 cycle, it gives the last cycle’s dates, labeled with their year, so you can plan around them; we have not guessed any 2027 date.
| When to act | Program | Who it is for, and fee | 2027 cycle, and the last one |
|---|---|---|---|
| Now to Jan. 15, 2027 | Manufacturing Leadership Awards | Manufacturers anywhere; anyone can nominate; $395 per nomination | Deadline Jan. 15, 2027 (announced). Two Manufacturers of the Year, one large and one small or midsize; gala June 30, 2027, Scottsdale, Ariz. |
| Late January to early April | IndustryWeek Best Plants | Plants in the US, Canada or Mexico operating at least three years, physical products only; fee on the program’s About page, with an early-bird discount in 2026 | Not yet announced. The 2026 call was posted Jan. 27, 2026, with an April 3 deadline |
| February to March | Plastics Technology Top Shops | Injection molders; free and anonymous | Not yet announced. The 2026 survey was open as of Feb. 16 and closed March 31, 2026; the top 20% in key categories earn the designation |
| February to May | ASSEMBLY Plant of the Year | US manufacturing facilities; no entry fee | Not yet announced. The 2026 call was posted Feb. 6, 2026, with a May 1 deadline; judged by ASSEMBLY’s editors on operational measures |
| April to June | BD+C Top Building Products | Building product makers; fee not stated | Not yet announced. The 2024 call was posted April 22, 2024, and the 2026 competition was still taking entries May 29, 2026, with an extended deadline; winners run in the November/December issue |
| Watch for the survey; honorees in July | Modern Machine Shop Top Shops | Machine shops at any performance level; free | Not yet announced. Every participant gets a benchmarking report; 2026 honorees were named July 21, 2026, one per category |
| June to August | Control Engineering System Integrator of the Year | Firms that design and implement control systems; no nomination fee stated | The 2027 cycle ran June 1 to Aug. 28, 2026 and is closed; 2024, 2025 and 2026 winners are not eligible; the 2028 cycle is not yet announced |
| October to January | Control Engineering Product of the Year | Automation product makers; fee not stated; qualified subscribers vote | The 2026 cycle took nominations Oct. 1, 2025 to Jan. 30, 2026; the page showed no 2027 cycle on Oct. 26, 2026 |
| Closed for 2027 | Best of IBS | 2027 IBS exhibitors only; free | Closed Oct. 18, 2026 (Oct. 12 in one place on the FAQ); onsite judging Feb. 2 and 3, 2027 |
| Closed for 2027 | AHR Expo Innovation Awards | HVACR product makers; entry fee charged | Winners announced Oct. 15, 2026, in AHR Expo’s own release; ten categories judged by ASHRAE members; on display at AHR Expo, Chicago, Jan. 25 to 27, 2027 |
| No current cycle | The Fabricator FAB 40 | US contract and custom metal fabricators; no fee stated | The form page is for the June 2024 ranking and is closed; no cycle after 2024 is visible |
| No dates posted | MDM Women in Distribution | Women in distribution; fee not stated | The page links to a nomination page and gives no dates |
Two more programs are worth knowing. The Robot Report’s RBR50 recognizes robotics organizations, with honorees including Robot of the Year, Startup of the Year and Application of the Year; its 2026 report page gives no nomination process or dates. For building products, Architectural Record’s 2027 calendar lists Record Products of the Year, a competition for products introduced to the North American market within the last year, in its November issue, and points to its call for entries for deadlines.
Is an award worth the effort?
Enter if the program gives you a benchmark report, proof your buyers recognize, or something for the careers page. The Top Shops programs do all three, whereas a paid award with no report and no audience your buyers read is advertising.
Plant awards ask for operational metrics such as on-time delivery, scrap, safety and turnover. Gathering them is useful on its own, it is the same data an editor will want, and a win belongs on the capabilities page buyers actually read.
In your industry
Metals and Machining
Start with MMS Top Shops, and use the Better Production and Case in Point sections for application stories. The FAB 40 has shown no cycle since its June 2024 ranking, so fabricators should not plan around it.
Plastics and Rubber
Take the Plastics Technology Top Shops survey when the 2027 survey opens, likely in February if it follows 2026. MoldMaking Technology is the right home for tooling stories, and Plastics Machinery & Manufacturing for a processor’s equipment story.
Industrial Machinery and Equipment
Application stories with a named customer and measured results are the currency. ASSEMBLY’s Plant of the Year is free if your own plant is the story, and its 2027 monthly themes tell you which issue fits.
Automation and Industrial Tech
Product news goes through databases now, so spend your effort on application stories and on helping integrator partners enter System Integrator of the Year when the 2028 cycle opens in June 2027, if it follows the 2027 cycle’s timing. Control Engineering’s 2027 calendar lists a topic for every month, so match an application story to the month it fits and pitch it before that month’s deadline.
Building Products
The product awards tied to IBS and AHR Expo closed in October 2026, so watch for the 2028 calls (our IBS and KBIS plan covers the show itself). BD+C Top Building Products and Record Products of the Year are open to any maker, and Architectural Record’s product sections by month give you a 2027 pitch calendar.
Industrial Distribution
A distributor’s story about a supplier program is a better pitch to MDM or Industrial Distribution than the supplier’s own release.
What to do Monday
- Ask your three largest customers which trade publication they read, find that publication in the directory, and open its guidelines or contact page. If it posts rules for contributors, the length and lead time are there.
- Pull three projects from the past 12 months with a number attached (changeover minutes, scrap rate, lead time, headcount) and ask each customer for written permission to use their name.
- Write one pitch to one editor, with the number in the subject line and an offer of a plant visit. Automation suppliers have a dated target in Control Engineering’s Feb. 1, 2027 deadline for its April/May edition.
- If a project fits the Manufacturing Leadership Awards, start the $395 nomination now; it closes Jan. 15, 2027.
- Start a sheet of on-time delivery, scrap, safety and turnover numbers for the last two years. Plant of the Year and Best Plants ask for them, and so will an editor.
- Set three reminders, one in late November 2026 to check Control Engineering’s Product of the Year page, one in late January 2027 for the Best Plants, Plant of the Year and Plastics Technology Top Shops calls, and one in early June 2027 for System Integrator of the Year if your integrators enter.
