What OEM buyers search when they need a CNC machine shop
The biggest machining searches belong to Xometry, Protolabs and the map pack. We pulled the keyword numbers and checked page one for three city searches on Oct. 26, 2026 to find the searches a mid-size job shop can actually win.

When we searched “cnc machine shop cleveland ohio” on Oct. 26, 2026, seven of the nine organic results were machine shops’ own websites. No instant-quote platform made page one. Run the same check on the plain head term, “cnc machining services,” searched about 3,200 times a month in the US, and the page flips to Xometry, Protolabs and the other platforms.
Given that split, a job shop should leave the head term to the platforms and go after city searches, process-plus-capability searches such as “swiss machining services,” and the map pack. Its search plan has three parts: a Google Business Profile that competes in the map pack where you are, honest location pages for the metros you really serve, and one capability page per process that states what you can hold.
What do buyers type when they look for a machine shop?
US monthly search volume and Ahrefs keyword difficulty (0 to 100, higher is harder), pulled Oct. 26, 2026, as 12-month averages. The last column is what Ahrefs’ most recent snapshot of each US results page shows above or beside the organic results.
| Search | US monthly volume | Difficulty | Results page features (Ahrefs snapshot) |

Most of the volume sits in “near me” and plain “machine shop” searches, where Google answers with a map before any website. The specific process searches are small, often a few hundred a month, with difficulty near zero. Small is fine, because a buyer who types “swiss machining services” has a part in mind.
Who wins “cnc machining services,” and why not you?
The head term is a platform search. In our check from southwest Ohio on Oct. 26, 2026, seven of the eight organic results were instant-quote platforms and marketplaces, and the eighth was a Wisconsin shop’s page aimed at Ohio buyers. Our manufacturing SEO study names them and shows why their pages win; our Thomasnet and RFQ marketplace comparison has Ahrefs’ Oct. 23 snapshot of the same page.
You can bid on the head term in Google Ads if your margins support it; our Google Ads guide for job shops covers what to bid on. For organic search, put your effort where the platforms are absent.
What happens when a buyer searches “cnc machine shop” plus a city?
We searched “cnc machine shop” plus a city for three metros: Houston, Cleveland and Charlotte. All three searches ran on Oct. 26, 2026 from the same browser in southwest Ohio, not from inside any of the three metros. These are city-named searches seen from Ohio. A buyer sitting in Houston or Charlotte may see a different page one and a different map pack, so read the map pack names below as what Google showed us, not as a ranking inside those cities.
Houston. Page one held at least five shops’ own pages, among them pages on aagroup.com, midway-machine.com, ftcindustries.com and customcomponentsinc.com, plus Yelp, a Reddit thread on Houston CNC shops, a shop’s Facebook page and a company-list site. The map pack showed SS CNC Machine Shop, Ultimate Precision Tech and CNC Prime.
Cleveland. Seven of nine results were shops: Criterion Precision, Dunham Machine, Marich Machine, AeroTech CNC, Ram Tool’s Cleveland service-area page, Ripley Machine’s Cleveland page and Brooklyn Machine, plus Yelp and a directory. The map pack showed Cuyahoga Precision Manufacturing, Quality CNC Machining, CNC Performance Products and Absolute Machine Tools.
Charlotte. Again seven shops: NCX Concepts, CNC Performance Engineering, Ellis Machine Works, Distinctive Manufacturing’s Charlotte page, QProd, Tri-Tec Industries and an Owens Industries Charlotte page, plus Yelp and a directory. The map pack showed Tri-Tec Industries, CNC Performance Engineering and RC-CNC Machine.
No platform appeared in the organic results for any of the three, so on this evidence city searches belong to the shops.
| Instant-quote platforms in organic results | Shops' own pages | Other results | |
|---|---|---|---|
| cnc machining services | 7 of 8 | 1 of 8 | 0 of 8 |
| cnc machine shop + Cleveland | 0 of 9 | 7 of 9 | 2 of 9: Yelp, a directory |
| cnc machine shop + Charlotte | 0 of 9 | 7 of 9 | 2 of 9: Yelp, a directory |
Organic results, searched Oct. 26, 2026 from a browser in southwest Ohio, not from inside each metro; a buyer in the city may see a different page one. Houston is left out because we did not record its exact total: its page one held at least five shop pages and no platforms. Source: Our page-one log, Google.com, Oct. 26, 2026.
Do location pages for other cities help a machine shop?
Two of the pages above belong to shops that are not in the city named. Ripley Machine and Tool is in Ripley, New York. Its Cleveland page gives its New York address and a reason a buyer can check: the shop sits near Interstate 90 and offers just-in-time delivery and blanket release programs. It lists its Swiss turning range (0.125 to 1.250 inch diameter), its Kitamura horizontal mill and its ISO 9001 certification. The Owens Industries Charlotte page belongs to a shop in Oak Creek, Wisconsin.
Both pages ranked for us. Distance is one of the three factors Google says drive local results, and it is the part an out-of-state page cannot fake. The organic results below the map appear looser about distance, at least for city-named searches made from elsewhere.
In our view, a location page is worth building for a metro you actually ship to every week, and it should say how. Delivery times, the lane you run, the industries you serve there, a customer who will let you name them. A Cleveland buyer who lands on a page and discovers the shop is in another state will judge you on whether the page was straight with them. Ripley’s page states where the shop is and why the distance works, which is what that buyer needs to judge it.
Can a mid-size shop win “machine shop near me”?
Only through the map pack, and with a warning about who else is searching. From our southwest Ohio location on Oct. 26, page one for “machine shop near me” mixed contract machine shops with automotive engine machine shops: a cylinder head service’s Facebook page, an auto parts store’s machine shop page and O’Reilly Auto Parts’ machine shop services page. Some of that 15,000 monthly volume is people with a car engine, not a drawing.
The mix changes how you set up your Google Business Profile, beyond the basics in our manufacturing SEO study. Choose categories and write a description that says contract or production machining for manufacturers, and list the processes you run. Add photos of the machines and parts, not the parking lot. Ask steady customers for reviews that mention the work (“five-axis aluminum housings, on time for three years”), because review text is the first thing the next buyer reads about you.
Which process searches can a job shop win?
Process plus a machine capability is the best target. “Swiss machining services” (250 a month, difficulty 2) showed Xometry first and then mostly shops: Miller Precision, a Cincinnati shop’s Swiss lathe page, Hogge Precision, McCormick Industries and Swissomation. Hogge’s page ranked by saying exactly what the shop does: bar stock up to 1-1/4 inches, parts up to 8 inches per chucking, tolerances “as close as .0005 in,” an ISO 9001:2015 registered quality system and a request-a-quote button. Our teardown of job shop capabilities pages has the full list of what such a page should state.
Five-axis searches behave the same way. “5 axis cnc machining services” (150, difficulty 4) came back heavily localized to Ohio for us, with shop pages from Compass Precision and Roberson Tool’s Columbus page among directories. Compass Precision’s page lists 11 facilities with a certification matrix by plant, though no machine models or work envelopes, which is the next thing a buyer looks for.
Material searches belong to the platforms’ guides. “Titanium cnc machining” (200, difficulty 2) was mostly guides: Protolabs, Fictiv, Hubs, PCBWay, Makerverse, a Reddit thread. If titanium is a real strength, put it on your capability page with the parts and tolerances you hold. Writing a better general guide than Protolabs is a poor use of a small team’s time.
Cost searches go to calculators and platforms. “Cnc machining cost” (200) carries an AI Overview and ads in Ahrefs’ snapshot. A shop rarely wins it, though a plain page on what drives your quotes (setup, material, tolerance, quantity) helps the buyer who already found you.
What to do Monday
- Set each plant’s Google Business Profile categories and description to contract machining for manufacturers, so it stops competing with engine shops, and ask five steady customers for reviews that name the work.
- Build one page per process you sell (five-axis milling, Swiss turning, horizontal milling, grinding), with the process name in the URL and title and its envelope, tolerances, materials and certifications as text.
- List the metros you ship to every week. Write a page for each only if you can say something true and specific about serving it: lanes, delivery times, industries, named customers with permission.
- Search “cnc machine shop” plus your own city and your top two customer cities in a private window, and note who holds the map pack and page one. If you can, ask a customer or sales rep in each city to run the same search, since a search from your office does not show what a buyer there sees. Repeat each quarter.
- Leave “cnc machining services” and the material guides to the platforms in organic search. If the head term matters, test it in paid search with a tight geography.
