Injection molding cost: what buyers search before they pick a molder, and whether to publish your pricing

Four cost searches add up to about 1,080 a month in the US, and half the molders we reviewed publish no dollar figures. Molders should post tooling ranges and cost drivers in their own numbers, and keep piece price in the quote. We checked eight molders and two marketplaces on Oct. 26, 2026.

A robot gripper lifts a gray molded housing from an open injection mold.

An engineer sourcing a new housing types “custom injection molding” about 1,600 times a month in the US, according to our Ahrefs pull on Oct. 26, 2026. “Plastic injection molding” draws 2,400. Alongside those sit the cost questions: “injection molding cost” at 800 a month, “how much does injection molding cost” at 150, “injection mold cost” at 100 and “injection molding cost calculator” at 30. Together that is about 1,080 searches a month from people asking what this will cost, more than “injection molding companies” (500) and “injection molding quote” (250) combined.

On page one for “injection molding cost,” the first result was a Reddit thread. The rest were a 3D printer maker’s blog, Protolabs, RapidDirect’s blog, an online estimator and three US molders’ pages. Of the eight molders whose sites we reviewed, half say nothing about money on the pages we opened. Our position is that a molder should answer the cost question on its site, with tooling ranges and the drivers behind them, in its own numbers, while piece price stays in the quote.

What do OEM engineers search when they are sourcing a molder?

US monthly volume and Ahrefs keyword difficulty (0 to 100), pulled Oct. 26, 2026, 12-month averages:

Search US monthly volume Difficulty
plastic injection molding 2,400 4
custom injection molding 1,600 21
overmolding 1,200 8
insert molding 900 4
injection molding cost 800 3
injection molding services 800 20
injection molding near me 700 32
plastic injection molding companies 600 49
injection molding companies 500 5
low volume injection molding 350 3
injection molding quote 250 12
injection molding companies near me 200 32
how much does injection molding cost 150 9
injection mold cost 100 17
injection molding cost calculator 30 0

For a molder, the table splits three ways. Process searches (“overmolding,” “insert molding,” “low volume injection molding”) have real volume and low difficulty, so a page per process you run is worth building. “Companies” and “near me” searches are where a buyer makes a shortlist, and Google answers them with a map. And the cost questions are a steady, easy target: “injection molding cost” alone draws 800 a month with a difficulty of 3, and three molders already hold spots on its page one.

US searches a month for four injection molding cost questions

injection molding cost 800; how much does injection molding cost 150; injection mold cost 100; injection molding cost calculator 30. Difficulty runs from 0 to 17.

That is more than "injection molding companies" (500) and "injection molding quote" (250) combined. Source: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, US 12-month averages, pulled Oct. 26, 2026; the sum is ours.

Who wins custom injection molding searches today?

We searched from Chrome on Oct. 26, 2026, with Google placing us in southwest Ohio, so the map packs and some organic results lean toward Ohio molders.

“Custom injection molding”: Protolabs and Xometry first, with three molders (Thogus, Rapid Molding of North Canton, Ohio, and BMP Medical) among the platforms below; the full order is in the page-one log of our manufacturing SEO study, which ran the same search that day. The map pack showed Hamilton Custom Molding, Granger Plastics, Kittyhawk Molding and Resonetics.

“Injection molding companies”: top-10 lists from Quickparts, plasticmoldco.com (an Ohio list), Thomasnet and yijinsolution.com, Thogus’s Cincinnati service-area page, IQS Directory, Marne Plastics, Thunderbird Molding and Reddit. The map pack showed Kittyhawk, Granger and Eagle Mold.

“Injection molding quote”: Protolabs, PCBWay, Xometry, Reddit, PTI Engineered Plastics’ guide to getting a fast quote, Ponoko, Dassault Systèmes’ manufacturing service and Mid-State Mold’s article on what to have ready.

“Injection molding cost”: Reddit, Formlabs (a 3D printer maker), Protolabs’ cost-reduction tips, Fathom’s ICOMold cost page, Advanced Plastiform’s cost calculation post, RapidDirect, the CustomPartNet estimator and Crescent Industries’ case study.

The platforms own the quote searches. Molders still rank for cost, process and company searches, especially near their plants.

How do molders present cost on their own sites?

We reviewed eight molders and two marketplaces, all of which ranked on page one for at least one of these searches. That is a biased sample, but a useful one, because these are the sites buyers are actually landing on.

Company Instant quote Dollar figures published Cost drivers explained
Protolabs (marketplace and molder) Yes Mold cost “starts at $1,495” Yes, 11 tips, no dollar figures
Xometry (marketplace) Yes None on main molding page No dedicated guide
Fathom (ICOMold) Yes Mold ranges: $3,000 to $100,000 or more Yes, seven factors
Advanced Plastiform No Worked example: $75,000 tool, per-part cost build-up Yes, with formulas
Crescent Industries No Case study: $49,000 domestic vs $12,000 overseas tool Argues total cost
Rapid Molding No Prototype molding “starting at $899” Relative price tiers only
PTI Engineered Plastics No None What to send for a quote
Mid-State Mold No None What to have ready
Thogus No None None on capability page
BMP Medical No None FAQs on mold life and volume

Four approaches showed up, from most to least open.

Fathom publishes ranges. Its ICOMold page says a mold can cost “anywhere from $3,000 to $100,000 or more,” that “simple molds are typically in the $3,000 to $6,000 range” and that large, complex, high-production or multi-cavity molds “can cost $25,000 to $50,000 or more.” It puts resin at $2 to $20 a pound and names seven key factors, from mold size and cavity count to resin and production volume. It also offers instant online quotes and says every project is reviewed by a manufacturing engineer.

Advanced Plastiform publishes a worked example. In a post dated Jan. 26, 2026, it builds a part price line by line: $90,000 of upfront cost including a $75,000 tool, amortized over 300,000 parts to $0.30 each; material at $0.59; machine time at $0.19 from an $85 hourly rate, a 32-second cycle and four cavities; then labor, setup and post-processing. It shows the formulas, so an engineer can plug in their own numbers.

Two companies publish a starting price. Rapid Molding lists prototype molding “starting at $899” and shows bridge and production tooling only as relative price tiers (two and three dollar signs), with lead times for each (parts in 2 to 4 weeks from prototype tooling, 4 to 8 weeks from production tooling). Protolabs says its mold cost starts at $1,495.

Four molders publish nothing on price and rely on the quote form. Thogus and BMP Medical say nothing about price on their main molding pages. PTI and Mid-State Mold publish useful quote-preparation guides (PTI asks for STEP files, 2D drawings with key dimensions and tolerances, resin and grade, annual volume, validation needs and cleanroom class) but no figures.

The marketplaces are less transparent than their reputation. Neither Protolabs nor Xometry publishes a tooling range on its main molding page; they rely on the instant quote. Protolabs’ cost article is 11 design tips with no dollar figures. The cost search is open to any molder willing to write down what molds and parts cost.

Should a molder publish its pricing?

Publish tooling ranges and cost drivers, but not a piece price list.

Tooling is where buyers need orientation. An engineer comparing a $12,000 offshore quote with a $49,000 domestic one, the gap in Crescent Industries’ case study, needs to know which is normal for the part. A range by part class, from your own quote history, answers that and filters out buyers who cannot afford you before your estimator spends a day on them. Fathom already publishes ranges, so your competitors’ buyers are seeing numbers somewhere.

Piece price depends on resin, cycle time, cavities and volume, and Advanced Plastiform’s example shows how fast it moves. Publish the method and an example, and keep the number for the quote.

The common objections are fair, and each can be handled. Competitors will see your ranges, though they can already estimate your tooling from your press list. Buyers will anchor on the low end, so state what puts a tool at the low end. Since prices change with steel and resin costs, date the page and review it each quarter.

What should the cost page say?

Build one page that answers “how much does custom injection molding cost” for the work you actually do:

  1. Tooling ranges by part class, from your last 12 to 24 months of quotes. For example: single-cavity aluminum prototype tool for a small part; single-cavity steel production tool; multi-cavity or hot runner production tool; family mold. Give a low and high figure for each, and say what moves a tool from one end to the other.
  2. The drivers, in your words. Cavities, steel, side actions and undercuts, surface finish, tolerance, resin, annual volume. Fathom’s list is a reasonable checklist.
  3. One worked piece-price example with the inputs shown, in the style of Advanced Plastiform’s. Use a real part type you mold often.
  4. Lead times for prototype, bridge and production tooling, as Rapid Molding does.
  5. What to send for an accurate quote, as PTI and Mid-State Mold do: STEP file, drawing with key dimensions, resin and grade, annual volume, compliance needs.
  6. Tool ownership and maintenance terms. Xometry says customers own their tooling, and buyers comparing offshore quotes ask about this.
  7. A date at the top, and a quote form at the bottom.

What to do Monday

  1. Pull your last 12 months of tooling quotes and sort them into three or four part classes. Note the low and high for each. Those ranges are the core of the page.
  2. Search “injection molding cost,” “custom injection molding” and “insert molding” plus your city in a private window, and save who ranks.
  3. Write the cost page using the seven parts above. Put “injection molding cost” in the title and URL.
  4. Add a page per process you run (overmolding, insert molding, low volume molding) with presses by tonnage, resins you run and certifications as text. Our teardown of Top Shops’ capabilities pages shows which molders do this well.
  5. Verify the Google Business Profile for each plant, since “companies” and “near me” searches show a map first.
  6. Tell sales the page exists. Ask them to send it to every new inquiry before the first call, and track whether the quotes that follow land closer to budget.
